In a significant move towards the actualisation of the plan to establish a Cancer Treatment Centre at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, the facility today received, Dr Taofeeq Ige, who has been appointed as Radiation Safety Adviser for the proposed #BSUTH Cancer Treatment Centre.
Dr Ige on arrival was received by the Chairman Technical Committee for the implementation of the project and Consultant Oncologist, Dr Samuel, Otene, along side other members of the Committee.
The RSA who was immediately taken to the proposed site for the project by the committee members meticulously checked, and described it as " good enough and spacious for future expansion"
There after, he was shown the architectural designs for the project, which he expressed satisfaction with some aspects, while calling on the architect to effect changes on few other aspects for his certification.
He commended Governor Hyacinth Alia for his decision to establish the cente and noted that although it is a capital intensive project, it will have a multiplier effect on health care delivery in Benue State and the adjoining states, when completed and made functional.
Dr Ige advised the committee to visit some already existing cancer centres in order to understudy and learn from such centres.
Receiving the RSA after inspection of both the site and the designs, the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Stephen Hwande expressed confidence in his ability to guide the hospital aright, and noted that Governor Hyacinth Alia was interested in executing the project as quickly as possible, adding that the Governor's plan is to truely make the hospital a one stop facility.
The CMD described Dr Ige as a renowned expert with vast experience in radiation safety and applauded his choice as the adviser for the BSUTH Cancer project.
In his response, Dr Ige commended Dr Hwande for the giant strides at the hospital and urged him not to relent in his efforts to reposition the hospital.
It should be noted that the RSA serves as the Link between the institution and the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) whose major job is to guide the hospital on every aspect of Radiation Safety; to ensure that it does not have any issues with the regulatory body. (NNRA).
Dr Ige is one of the few NNRA-Licensed RSAs in the Country.
